Scams continue to affect communities nationwide, and Chatham County residents are not immune. As fraudsters become more sophisticated in their tactics, it is more important than ever for residents to understand how scams operate, recognize warning signs, and know what steps to take if they are targeted.

To help address this growing concern, Chatham County Government partnered with the Chatham County Police Department to produce a two-part Scam Awareness Mini-Series featuring Detective Keiana Robbins. This educational video series is designed to provide residents with practical, easy-to-understand information directly from law enforcement to help reduce the risk of fraud and financial exploitation.

Part One: Recognizing the Scam

In the first installment, Detective Robbins discusses the most common scams reported in Chatham County and explains how scammers manipulate their victims. These schemes often rely on creating a sense of urgency or fear, impersonating trusted organizations or government agencies, or requesting payment through nontraditional methods such as gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency. By understanding these tactics, residents can better identify suspicious activity and avoid falling victim to fraud.

Part Two: What to Do If You’re Targeted

The second installment focuses on what residents should do if they believe they have been contacted by a scammer or have already been victimized. Detective Robbins outlines the importance of reporting scams as soon as possible, preserving any communications or evidence, and taking steps to protect personal and financial information. Reporting scams not only helps individuals recover or limit losses but also assists law enforcement in identifying patterns and protecting others in the community.

The Scam Awareness Mini-Series reflects Chatham County Government’s ongoing commitment to public safety, community education, and proactive outreach. By sharing timely and reliable information, the County aims to empower residents to protect themselves, their families, and their neighbors.
